Goteborg Porter Drinkers Association Comes Calling at The Goth ...

Fine Group of Top Hatted Gents & Lady Came calling ...

We all have something about us that's eccentric surely, but the serious determination of the Goteborg Porter Drinkers Association, established 1937, must be beheld to be comprehended.

Their cause is one we Scots will certainly salute since it was Scotland's David Carnegie who gave Sweden the taste and his own fine beverage in the first place. Brewed in Goteborg of course! It may be owned [whisper it] by Carlsberg today but the brand survives and the Association honours it as we would ourselves in Prestonpans.

Armed with the CAMRA Guide to Walkers in these parts, they knew they must not miss The Goth or Roddy Beveridge's own Gothenburg Porter - regularly on sale at The Prestoungrange Gothenburg and brewed in our own Fowler's microbrewery. [And of course, Fowler's has been: Famous since the '45 - although there is no evidence The Prince ever tasted the Porter or even the Wee Heavie.]

These visitors are Porter Connoisseurs as can be imagined. They had scoured Edinburgh all morning and not found a Porter at all. But at The Goth at last their thirst could be slated. Roddy's brew was pronounced to be, wait for it:

AN EXCELLENT 'PROMENADE' PORTER by which they meant, we think, it was a light drink at 4.4, whereas a sedantry porter might well aspire to 5.5 or more.

Well done Roddy, and the temperature at about 10/ 12 degrees was deemed appropriate. Roddy himself alas was away at a distant Beer Festival so the Baron had to greet the guests - but the Swedish visitors' thanks and congratulations were extended not only to him but to the Goth's most welcoming staff. And that was before the Preston Lodge Rugby teams and their day's opponents arrived for the evening .....

N.B. The pictures above are in the Lord Mayor's Bar, named by Jorgen Linder, Lord Mayor of Goteborg in 2003. The painting is by Tom Ewing of which a copy hangs in Sweden where Tom gifted it to Jorgen Linder.

The picture below shows the Porter Drinkers' Association facing Goteborg [ESE from the James Fewell Bar we reckoned!] and proclaiming their traditional toast: Porter! Porter! holding high their traditional pewter tankards.
