WORLD PREMIERE LAUNCH OF INTERNATIONAL SCOTTISH TAPESTRY
IN PRESTONPANS

A magnificent new art treasure has been created in 25 countries around the world to tell tales of the lives and accomplishments of thousands of emigrant Scots across our diaspora. It’s a 150 panel embroidered tapestry known as The Scottish Diaspora Tapestry. It goes on display as a significant contributor to Homecoming 2014.

At its World Premiere and celebrations on Saturday May 31st some of those who helped stitch its panels from Australia, Canada, Southern Asia, Sweden and the Netherlands will be present as will East Lothian residents who themselves added panels . They’ll be joined and greatly thanked by the local team that led its creation. Chief amongst those is now ‘veteran’ tapestry designer Andrew Crummy and his two Stitching Coordinators Gillian Hart and Yvonne Murphy.

The grand opening is preceded on May 30th by message of congratulations from Scottish Cabinet Secretary for Culture, Fiona Hyslop MSP, who saw the work in progress on three occasions during 2012/ 2013, and a formal visit from her colleague Humza Yousaf MSP, Scotland’s Minister for International Development. He commented:

“I saw the early stitching of some of these beautiful panels when I was visiting India and Pakistan in 2013. To see them completed now, alongside the tales from so many other countries Scots have influenced is a double inspiration – not only for embroiderers who visit but also for what we Scots today can and maybe should seek to achieve ourselves. Its Scottish touring exhibitions will make an outstanding artistic contribution to our Homecoming Scotland 2014 Programme.

"We have been delighted in Government to give our wholehearted support to Andrew Crummy and his team and help fund this project from its very beginnings in 2011. It is an imaginative and powerful way to strengthen and develop our international links across the diaspora, and we encourage everyone who can to take the chance to see the tapestry as it tours Scotland this year.”

The Scottish Diaspora Tapestry is the second to be created in Prestonpans by the Prestoungrange Arts Festival. Since 1997 it has used all the arts on a grand scale from the tapestries to 60 murals and 4 totem poles, theatre, poetry, storytelling, living history re-enactments. The first tapestry depicting Bonnie Prince Charlie’s successful campaign that saw victory at Prestonpans in 1745 has already attracted over 250,000 visitors across Scotland, France and England including an 8 week display in Bayeux. Plans are afoot for that artwork, The Prestonpans Tapestry, to have a world class permanent home in the community alongside a Visitor Centre that ensures proper conservation and interpretation of the battlefield itself for generations to come.

The Scottish Diaspora Tapestry will spend 2015/ 2016 touring as many of the 25 countries that have contributed as possible with stitching groups playing hosts as it goes. When not on tour it will be available across Scotland for educational purposes and for display in Prestonpans’ arts hub at The Prestoungrange Gothenburg which is to be its residential home.

Volunteer embroiderers created the panels and the development, exhibition and other associated costs have been met by the Barons Courts of Prestoungrange & Dolphinstoun, Scottish Government, Creative Scotland, EventScotland’s Homecoming 2014 and Bord na Gaidhlig. Gaelic language guides have again be produced following the precedent set for The Prestonpans Tapestry with translations by Beathag Mhoireasdan.

Bidh an sgioba ionadail a chruthaich e sa chiad ŕite a’ cur fŕilte chridheil orra agus a’ toirt buidheachas dhaibh. “Chunnaic mi am fuaigheal air cuid de na pannalan ŕlainn sin aig toiseach gnothaich nuair a bha mi a’ tadhal air na h-Ěnnseachan is Pagastan ann an 2013. Tha a bhith gam faicinn crěochnaichte a-nis taobh ri taobh nan sgeulachdan bho a leithid de dhůthchannan eile air an tug Albannaich buaidh, na bhrosnachadh důbailte – chan ann a-mhŕin a thaobh an luchd-ghrčise a tha a’ tadhal ach cuideachd airson nas urrainn agus ’s dňcha na bu chňir do dh’Albannaich an latha an-diugh a choileanadh sinn fhěn.
