I: Proclaiming King James VIII on the Royal Mile

King James VIII and III Proclaimed at Edinburgh's Mercat Cross

One of the first acts of Bonnie Prince Charlie as Regent once Edinburgh had fallen into his hands was to Proclaim his father King. The occasion is recorded in the Prestonpans Tapestry of course, but like all such occasions they can take on even greater meaning when conducted in situ. And so it was that the 2013 Battle of Prestonpans Re-enactments were launched on Wednesday September 17th.

'The Highlanders marched up from the Netherbow to the sound of the pipes, to arrive at the City Chambers and 'demand' the keys to the Mercat Cross. The Alan Brecks and Edinburgh City Guard enthused a bemused yet gathering throng and introduced the Prince. As HRH The Prince Regent, Bonnie Prince Charlie read his own manifesto before formally proclaiming his father King of Scotland, England and Ireland. Much cheering ensued from both Jacobites and spectators!'
