Elegant Memorial for Prestonpans Miners'

It's a fitting an imaginative sculpture the town will love!

Fresh plans to put the long awaited memorial to Prestonpans’ miners in the heart of the town have now been submitted to East Lothian Council for approval.

The sculpture, by local artist Gardner Molloy, is ready to be unveiled after years of work raising the funds and creating the stone piece itself.

It's planned to place it at the junction of Schaw Road and Bankton Terrace, already known as The Shrine, and the plans have been lodged on behalf of Prestonpans Miners Memorial Statue Group, which has been keenly supported by Prestonpans Community Council.

The Memorial Group raised more than £30,000 for the statue, which recognises the two hundred and more workers who died in the mines, and those who worked there from the town over the centuries.

It depicts two miners at work down a shaft and has been created by Gardner Molloy over the last three years. It's maquette is shown below

The mining of coal in Prestonpans began in 1210, and continued for centuries.

Cockenzie-based stonemason and artist Gardner Molloy was brought on board to design and craft the three-metre-high sculpture.
