STAR OF THE EAST FLUTE BAND -Linda Gibbons

In May 1925, ten men decided it was time that Prestonpans had its own Flute Band so. with some friends and local youngsters, they formed 'The Star of the East". Their first President was Robert White. The practices were held in Mathieson's Hall. Cuthill. then moved to the Old Boathouse, Cockenxie. From there to Prestonpans Public School and for some time in the Old Comrades Room. Harlaw Hill. They were taught by Mr J Dodds and proudly walked behind Drum Major Thomas Wallace on their First parade in Airdrie in 1926.
In 1940 the Band wore uniforms supplied by Edinburgh City Police and altered to fit by wives and mothers, which led to the people of Harthill calling them "The wee Police cut-doon Band". At this time they were being taught by M Hanratty who died in 1948 when the post was taken over by Jimmy Blair, the son of a founder member. He taught until 1956 and was succeeded by Robert Buchanan. Practices moved to Mary Murray Institute, then to Castlepark Social Club where they met on Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday, and now they go to Tranent to meet in the James Blair Hall.
The Band plays at Galas, Church Parades, Remembrance Sundays. Civic Week parades and various other functions. In 1968 they won prizes for both Flute and Drum sections in the Amateur Association Contest in Glasgow.
Seventy five years have brought many changes and who can tell what the next seventy five will bring as young and old members prepare to march off in the year 2000 with the - "Star of the East Flute Band".
